NEW DELHI: “Who is Swamy? If he knows the murderer let him tell the police,” said a livid Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday over allegations of his alleged involvement in Sunanda Pushakar’s death made by BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy.

The Congress Rajya Sabha member reacted when asked by the media about his wife’s murder.

On many an occasion, Swamy has accused Tharoor of being involved in Sunanda’s murder. A couple of days ago, while speaking to the press, Swamy alleged, “Tharoor did not kill her, but he knows who killed her and facilitated her killing. He lied and tried to cover it up. So he will also be sent to jail, but won’t get capital punishment.”

Swamy has alleged that former union minister Shashi Tharoor knew about his wife’s killer and said that the Congress leader has been trying to cover up the case.

“Tharoor did not kill her, but he knows who killed her and facilitated her killing. He told lies and tried to cover up, so he will also be sent to jail, but won’t get capital punishment,” Swami said.

“I think our police is now active, those elements that wanted to suppress the case are no more in power,” he added.

Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in her five-star hotel room in the capital last January, two days after she alleged on Twitter that her husband Shashi Tharoor had been having an affair with a Pakistani journalist.

Pushkar, married to Tharoor since 2010, had been taking medication for various illnesses and early autopsy results suggested she may have overdosed on anti-depressants and sleeping pills.

But Delhi Police on January 6 said Sunanda Pushkar was poisoned to death.

Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said a murder case had now been registered against “unknown persons” and that the final medical report was clear that Pushkar, 52, died an unnatural death.

“She died due to poisoning. Whether the poison was given orally or injected into her body is being probed,” he said, adding her viscera would be sent abroad.

Tharoor’s aides said the couple had checked into the luxury hotel because of renovation work at his Delhi bungalow.

Prior to her death, Sunanda was embroiled in a spat with Pakistan-based journalist, Mehr Tarar, whom she accused of stalking her husband.

Delhi Police on Friday said that they had questioned a close friend of Pushkar identified as Sunil Trakru, a businessman.

Another official said Trakru’s name had surfaced during the questioning of Tharoor’s domestic help Shri Narayan Singh in November last year. Singh had again been questioned Thursday.

Singh was questioned for a few hours, during which he revealed that the couple had a fight a day before Pushkar was found dead.

Singh had also told police that Trakru had dropped Pushkar from the Delhi airport to Hotel Leela Palace where she was found dead in her room (number 345). (Agencies)
