Roger Federer (35) took down Rafael Nadal in the finals of the Australian Open men’s singles event in a an epic five-set showdown, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. It is Federer’s fifth Australian Open title, his first since 2010 and 18th Grand Slam singles title.

Having won his first major title since 2012, he showed everyone he’s not about to fade to black just yet. He returned in the best possible style besting his long-time rival. This was the duo’s 12th Slam encounter, with Nadal winning nine of the matches and their ninth Australian Open final encounter.

With this triumph Federer became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title in more than 40 years.

Federer spent 6 months of last season out through injury and came back to beat the man who has had the better of him historically.
