Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus Williams to win women’s singles title and lift the 2017 Australian Open trophy at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. She won the match 6-4, 6-4 in one hour 21 minutes flat. Serena has reclaimed her world number one ranking with this win.

This is her seventh Australian Open singles title and 23rd Grand Slam singles title, breaking her tie with Steffi Graf for most career Grand Slams (22) in the open era. She is now within one victory of Margaret Court’s all time record of 24.

Williams (35) is now the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in the open era while her elder sister, Venus (36) is the oldest finalist in Grand Slam singles in the Open era. They won their sixth Wimbledon doubles title last night after beating Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-4 and have won a total of 14 women’s doubles titles together.

Serena has won three gold medals in Olynpics in women’s doubles event in 2000,2008 and 2012 and one gold in women’s singles event in 2012.
