World’s fastest man Usain Bolt received the Laureus “Sportsman of the Year” award for a record-equaling fourth time, from legendary Michael Jhonson. American gymnast Simone Biles won the award for “Sportswoman of the Year”.

Nominees for Sportsman of the Year category were Usain Bolt (Athletics), Stephen Curry (Basketball), Mo Farah (Athletics), LeBron James (Basketball), Andy Murray (Tennis) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Football).

Bolt won this award for the fourth time (2009, 2010 and 2013), thus entering the record four-time Laureus award winner category with tennis legends Roger Federer and Serena Williams, and surfer Kelly Slater.

Olympian Michael Phelps bagged the ‘Comeback of the Year’ award while Formula One champion Nico Roseberg claimed the ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ award. Winners in some other categories include- Italian Beatrice Vio (Sportsperson of the Year with a disability), racing cyclist Rachel Atherton (Action Sportsperson of the Year), and Baseball team Chicago Club (Team of the Year).

Laureus World Sports Awards, popularly known as the “Oscar of Sports” are presented to honor the greatest sporting achievements every year. A nomination panel comprising of world’s top sports editors, writers and broadcasters create a list of six nominations for each category and the members of Laureus Academy select the winner by voting.
